Description

The Gro-Med 5kg coco coir brick is a triple-washed, low EC, OMRI Listed block of 100% coconut coir. One compressed 10 lb brick expands to more than 20 gallons (about 80 quarts) of clean, pH-neutral substrate when you add water.

It is the standard base for CVG mushroom substrate and casing layers, and it works just as well in garden soil mixes and hydroponics. Compressed bricks store small and ship cheap, then open up when you need them.

Why growers pick Gro-Med coir

  • Triple washed, low EC – Excess salts are rinsed out, so you start from a clean base for mushroom substrate and sensitive roots.
  • OMRI Listed – Approved for organic growing.
  • pH neutral – Roughly 5.8–6.5, so it goes straight into a CVG blend or casing layer without buffering.
  • Holds water, keeps air – Stays at field capacity without packing down or waterlogging, which supports even colonization.
  • Naturally resistant to mold and bacteria – A cleaner foundation than peat or garden soil.
  • Big expansion, small footprint – One brick makes enough substrate for large monotubs or a big CVG batch.
Gro-Med coco coir brick hydrated for mushroom substrate

How to hydrate a brick

  1. Pick a big container. A 5kg brick grows to more than 20 gallons, so use a large tub, bin or mixer.
  2. Add hot water. Pour it over the brick and let it soak in and loosen the fibers.
  3. Break it up. Fluff the coir by hand as it expands, then let it cool.
  4. Bring it to field capacity. A firm squeeze should release only a few drops of water.
  5. Mix and use. Blend with vermiculite and gypsum for CVG, use it as a casing layer, or add it to garden and hydroponic mixes.

Need more than one? The 4-pack costs less per brick, and a full pallet of 220 bricks is available for farms and resellers.

FAQ

How much does the brick expand?

Once hydrated, it expands to more than 20 gallons, roughly 80 quarts.

Is this coco coir good for mushroom substrate?

Yes. Gro-Med coir is triple washed, low EC and pH neutral, which makes it a clean base for CVG (coco coir, vermiculite, gypsum) and casing layers. It holds moisture while still letting air through for colonization.

Do I need to buffer the pH?

No. It is pH neutral (roughly 5.8–6.5), so it can go straight into a CVG blend.

Is it organic?

Yes. Gro-Med coir is OMRI Listed for organic growing and is 100% natural coconut coir with no additives.

Can I use it for plants too?

Yes. It works in garden soil mixes, seed starting and hydroponics as well as mushroom substrate.

Do you sell a smaller brick?

Yes. The 650g coir brick expands to about 10 quarts, which suits a single small monotub or a test batch.
