What Is a Just Add Spores Grow Kit?
A just add spores grow kit is everything except the genetics. You get the sterilized grain, the pasteurized bulk substrate, a filter-patch bag or jars with an injection port, and in the larger kits a tub or chamber to fruit in. You supply a spore or liquid culture syringe. Because the kit is the same whatever you inject, the one you choose depends on how much you want to grow and how hands-on you want to be.

Which Spore-Ready Grow Kit Should You Get?
Match the kit to your experience and the size of harvest you want. Every option below works with any dung-loving species.
| Kit | Best for | Effort | Batch size |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-in-One Grow Bag | First-time growers | Lowest: inject, wait, fruit in the bag | 4 lb, XL 6 lb, or 6 lb monotub starter |
| PF Tek Jar Kits | Learning the classic method | Moderate: jars, then a fruiting chamber | Half-pint substrate jars |
| Complete Monotub Kit | Bigger harvests per grow | Moderate: spawn to bulk once colonized | 28Q, 44Q or 66Q tub |
| MycoClimate Automated Tub | Hands-off growing, hard-to-control rooms | Low: controls temperature and fresh air | 44Q or 66Q tub |
| Grass Lover's Kit | Experienced growers, grass-loving species | Advanced: casing layer, tighter conditions | XL specialty kit |
Spores and Liquid Culture: What You Add
Our kits work with both spore syringes and liquid culture syringes. Liquid culture is live mycelium, so it skips germination and usually colonizes faster. A spore syringe is slower to start but gives you more genetic variety. Either way, buy from a vendor that tests its syringes for contamination, because a dirty syringe ruins a clean kit.
Two vendors we trust are Spore Genetics and Premium Spores. For what to look for in a vendor, read our spore syringe buying guide, and check the dosing chart on our Spores page for how many cc each kit takes.
How a Grow Works, Start to Finish
The steps are the same whether you start with an all-in-one bag or a monotub kit. Monotub growers add one extra move: mixing the colonized grain into the bulk substrate before fruiting.
- Inoculate. Wash up, wipe the injection port with alcohol, and inject your spore or liquid culture syringe. See the dosing chart for how many cc each kit takes.
- Colonize. Keep the kit somewhere dark at room temperature (dung-loving species colonize best around 75–80°F) until white mycelium covers the grain.
- Fruit. Give it indirect light, fresh air and high humidity. Pins form within days and grow into mature mushrooms in about a week.
- Harvest and dry. Pick as the veil under the cap starts to tear, then dry fully before storage. Our drying kits and dehydrators handle that step.

Why Growers Choose Midwest Grow Kits
We have been making grow kits since May 2011, longer than almost anyone selling online today. Grain is sterilized in-house and bags and jars are made fresh, not pulled from a warehouse shelf months after production. Every kit comes with free step-by-step guides, and when something looks off mid-grow, our team answers questions from growers who have run the same kits thousands of times.
Just Add Spores Grow Kit FAQ
Are these the same as magic mushroom grow kits?
While they are technically the same, our kits contain no spores and no mushrooms, only sterilized grain, substrate and growing equipment. What you grow depends on the spores or culture you add, so check your local laws and regulations regarding growing these types of mushrooms before you start.
Do just add spores grow kits come with spores?
No. Spore-ready kits ship without spores, and that is standard across the industry. Each kit here is the sterilized grain, substrate and container; you add a spore or liquid culture syringe from the vendor of your choice. Our Spores & Liquid Culture guide lists the vendors we trust and how many cc each kit needs.
What is the easiest grow kit for beginners?
An all-in-one grow bag. The grain and substrate are already combined and sterilized, so you inject through the self-healing port, let it colonize, and fruit right in the bag with no jars, no spawning and no tub. When you want bigger harvests, step up to a monotub kit.
Do these kits work with any strain?
Yes. The kit is the same no matter which strain you choose. Any dung-loving species or strain on a spore or liquid culture syringe works. Choose the strain for its traits, then choose the kit for how much you want to grow.
Should I use a spore syringe or liquid culture?
Liquid culture is live mycelium, so it skips germination and usually colonizes faster with fewer stalls. A spore syringe takes longer to start but gives you more genetic variety. Both inject the same way into every kit on this page.
How long does a grow take?
Most grows take about 4 to 8 weeks from injection to first harvest. Colonization is the long part, usually 2 to 5 weeks, and goes faster with liquid culture and a warm room around 75–80°F. Fruiting then takes 1 to 2 weeks, and most kits produce more than one flush.
What does dung-loving or manure-loving mean?
It describes species that grow naturally on manure and grassland in the wild. Kits for them use a manure-based or CVG (coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum) substrate. These species don't actually need manure: they fruit well on pure CVG, which carries less contamination risk for beginners.
