Which Monotub Size Is Right for You?
Monotub size determines how much spawn and substrate you'll use and how big your harvests will be. All three Growers Select sizes use the same custom-molded design, durable polypropylene construction, and complete accessory package — they differ only in capacity.
28Q Small — Compact & Beginner-Friendly
Best for: First-time growers, small spaces, or anyone who wants to manage a smaller, lower-cost grow.
The 28Q is the easiest size to manage and store. It uses less spawn and substrate, which means a smaller investment per grow and less to lose if your first attempt isn't perfect. We recommend spawning it with one 32oz grain jar. Available as a single tub or a 2-pack.
44Q Medium — The Versatile Middle
Best for: Growers who want a solid harvest without going to full size, or those ready to scale up from a 28Q.
The 44Q is the sweet spot for many growers — meaningfully larger yields than the 28Q while still being manageable. We recommend spawning it with one full spawn bag (2.25 to 2.5 lbs) plus about 7.5 lbs of bulk substrate.
66Q Large — Maximum Yield
Best for: Experienced growers and anyone who wants the biggest flushes from a single tub.
The 66Q is our largest monotub and produces the biggest harvests. It gives mycelium more room to colonize before pinning and rewards you with larger flushes. We recommend spawning it with two spawn bags (5 lbs total) plus about 10 lbs of bulk substrate.
Buying multiple tubs? Multi-packs and wholesale
If you're running more than one grow at a time or scaling up a small operation, our multi-packs bring the per-tub cost down. The 28Q 2-Pack is great for running parallel small grows, and our Wholesale 12-Pack is built for commercial growers and resellers who need volume at the best price.
What makes our monotubs different
Most monotubs sold online are just plastic storage totes that you drill yourself. Ours are purpose-built from the ground up:
- Custom-molded, no drilling required. Every tub comes with 2-inch holes already molded in the correct positions for plugs or filter disks. No measuring, no drilling, no cracked plastic — the hole placement is engineered for proper air exchange, with some holes positioned higher than others to optimize airflow across the substrate surface.
- Extra-durable polypropylene. Built to support up to 200 pounds of weight on top, so you can stack equipment or other tubs without worry.
- Stackable with anti-slide notches. Built-in notches let you stack tubs securely without sliding — a real space-saver when running multiple grows.
- Complete package included. Every tub ships with incubation plugs (to seal the holes during colonization), polyester filter disks (for the fruiting stage), and a custom-fit liner.
About the filter disks
Our monotub filter disks are made from a polyester material that strikes the right balance for fruiting: they hold humidity inside the tub while still allowing fresh air exchange, and they filter out airborne contaminants that would otherwise threaten your grow. During the colonization phase you seal the holes with the included plugs; when you move to fruiting, you swap in the filter disks to allow the gas exchange mushrooms need to pin and grow.
Growers Select vs. Max Yield Bin
You'll see two 66Q options in this collection. Here's how to choose:
- Growers Select 66Q — our standard large monotub with 6 air-exchange holes. The right choice for the vast majority of bulk grows.
- Max Yield Bin 66Q — a similar large-format design with two key differences: 8 air-exchange holes instead of 6, plus small holes right under the top of the base to assist with gourmet fruiting blocks. We recommend the Max Yield Bin specifically for growers who need additional air exchange or who are fruiting two blocks in a single tub.
For a standard single-species bulk grow, the Growers Select is all you need. Step up to the Max Yield Bin if you're running high-density gourmet grows or want maximum fresh air exchange.
Quick decision tree
- First grow or small space? 28Q Small (spawn with one 32oz jar).
- Want a solid harvest, still manageable? 44Q Medium (one spawn bag + 7.5 lbs substrate).
- Want the biggest flushes? 66Q Large (two spawn bags + 10 lbs substrate).
- Running parallel grows? 28Q 2-Pack.
- Commercial volume? Wholesale 12-Pack.
- High air exchange or two gourmet blocks per tub? Max Yield Bin 66Q.
Frequently Asked Questions About Monotubs
What is a monotub and how does it work?
A monotub is a plastic tub modified with filtered air holes that creates the humid, oxygenated environment mushrooms need to fruit. You mix colonized grain spawn into bulk substrate inside the tub, seal it during colonization, then introduce fresh air and light to trigger fruiting. It's the most popular bulk growing method because it's affordable, scalable, and produces large flushes with minimal effort once set up.
Do I need to drill these monotubs myself?
No. Every Growers Select monotub is custom-molded with 2-inch air holes already in the correct positions — no drilling, no measuring, no risk of cracking the plastic. The hole placement is engineered for proper air exchange, with some holes set higher than others to optimize airflow across the substrate surface. You just install the included plugs or filter disks depending on which growing stage you're in.
What comes with each monotub?
Every tub ships complete with incubation plugs (to seal the air holes during colonization), polyester filter disks (for the fruiting stage), and a custom-fit liner. You don't need to buy anything extra to set up the tub itself — just add your spawn and substrate.
What size monotub should I buy?
For a first grow or a small space, the 28Q is easiest to manage. The 44Q is a versatile middle ground with solid yields. The 66Q produces the biggest flushes and is best for experienced growers who want maximum harvest. If you're running multiple grows at once, consider the 28Q 2-pack or the wholesale 12-pack.
How much spawn and substrate do I need for each size?
For the 28Q small tub, we recommend one 32oz grain jar. For the 44Q medium, use one spawn bag (2.25 to 2.5 lbs) plus about 7.5 lbs of bulk substrate. For the 66Q large, use two spawn bags (5 lbs total) plus about 10 lbs of bulk substrate. These ratios are dialed in for each tub's volume.
How durable are these monotubs?
Very. They're injection-molded from durable polypropylene and engineered to support up to 200 pounds of weight on top. They also stack with built-in anti-slide notches, so you can safely stack tubs or equipment without sliding or cracking.
What are the filter disks made of and how do they work?
Our filter disks are made of a polyester material that holds humidity inside the tub while allowing fresh air exchange and filtering out airborne contaminants. During colonization you seal the holes with the included plugs; when you switch to fruiting, you swap in the filter disks to provide the gas exchange mushrooms need to pin and grow.
What is the difference between the Growers Select and Max Yield Bin?
Both are large 66Q monotubs. The Growers Select has 6 air-exchange holes and is the right choice for most bulk grows. The Max Yield Bin has 8 air-exchange holes plus small holes under the top of the base to assist with gourmet fruiting blocks. Choose the Max Yield Bin if you need additional air exchange or are fruiting two blocks in a single tub; otherwise the Growers Select covers standard grows.
Can I reuse a monotub for multiple grows?
Yes. After a grow is finished, dispose of the spent substrate, sanitize the tub thoroughly with a bleach solution or isopropyl alcohol, replace the filter disks and liner if needed, and run a fresh grow. With proper sanitation between grows, the tubs themselves last indefinitely.
What's the difference between buying a monotub here and a complete monotub grow kit?
This collection is the tub itself, with filter disks, plugs, and liner included — for growers who source their spawn and substrate separately. Our complete monotub grow kits bundle the same tub with everything else you need (substrate, spawn, lighting, and instructions) in one package. Buy the tub alone if you already have your other components; buy the complete kit if you want everything in one box.
Do you offer wholesale pricing on monotubs?
Yes. Our Wholesale 12-Pack brings the per-tub cost down significantly and is built for commercial growers and resellers. Each tub in the lot still includes filter disks and a liner.
