Pre-Colonized Gourmet Kits

(15 products)

Gourmet mushroom grow kits are the easiest way to grow fresh mushrooms at home — no experience, no equipment, no learning curve. Each kit is a fully pre-colonized fruiting block, grown and ready to go. You open the box, cut the bag, add light, and mist to keep it moist. Fresh gourmet mushrooms start appearing within days.

There's no injection, no incubation, and no sterile technique to learn. The hard part (growing the mycelium) is already done. You're just triggering the block to fruit, which it wants to do naturally. It's the perfect entry point for first-time growers, a fun project for kids, a thoughtful gift, or a way for home cooks to harvest restaurant-quality mushrooms right off the counter.

Our best sellers are Blue Oyster and Lion's Mane, with Shiitake a close third.

How Gourmet Grow Kits Work

Every gourmet kit arrives as a fully colonized fruiting block — the mycelium has already consumed the substrate and is ready to produce mushrooms. Getting your first harvest is genuinely simple:

  • Open the box and remove the block.
  • Cut the bag following the included instructions (each variety has its own specific instructions).
  • Add light — indirect natural light or a basic LED is plenty. Mushrooms don't photosynthesize, but light tells them where to fruit.
  • Mist regularly to keep the surface and surrounding air moist.
  • Harvest when the mushrooms are full-sized, then mist for the next flush.

That's it. No injection, no incubation, no pressure cooker, no sterile technique. Every kit includes printed instructions, and we also include directions for using your own clear plastic tote to hold humidity if you want a more controlled setup.

Growing in a dry climate? If your home has low humidity (common in winter or in arid regions), a Portable Mushroom Humidity Tent makes a big difference in keeping your block moist and fruiting well. Add any gourmet kit plus the humidity tent to your cart and the tent is automatically discounted to just $3.99.

Choosing Your Variety

We make 13 pre-colonized gourmet and functional varieties, all grown in-house through a collaboration between Myco Labs and Midwest Grow Kits. Here's how they break down.

Fastest & Easiest (Best for Beginners)

The oyster family and lion's mane are the quickest to fruit and the most forgiving — usually producing mushrooms within days of opening. Start here if it's your first kit.

  • Blue Oyster — our #1 seller. Fast, aggressive, huge clusters, mild savory flavor.
  • Lion's Mane — #2 seller. Shaggy white pom-poms, mild seafood-like flavor, popular for its studied wellness properties.
  • Pink Oyster — vivid pink clusters, fast and prolific, bold flavor.
  • Pearl (White) Oyster — the classic versatile oyster, mild and great for any dish.
  • King Blue Oyster — meaty texture, robust flavor.
  • King Trumpet Oyster — thick meaty stems, prized in gourmet cooking, scallop-like texture.

A Little More Patience (Slower-Fruiting Culinary)

These take longer to fruit than the oysters but reward you with some of the most prized culinary mushrooms in the world.

  • Shiitake — #3 seller. Rich, savory, umami-packed. Takes longer to fruit but worth the wait.
  • Chestnut — nutty flavor, crunchy texture, beautiful tan caps.
  • Maitake (Hen of the Woods) — a delicacy with a rich, earthy flavor. One of the more advanced culinary varieties to fruit.

Functional & Medicinal Varieties

These are grown for their wellness properties rather than the dinner plate. They fruit the same spray-and-grow way but typically take longer to develop. Each kit's description notes its specifics.

  • Red Reishi — the classic "mushroom of immortality," grown for teas and extracts.
  • Antler Reishi — a striking antler-form reishi, popular for display and extracts.
  • Turkey Tail — colorful banded brackets, widely studied functional mushroom.
  • Cordyceps Militaris — bright orange functional mushroom. Comes as a 2 lb block (rather than 5 lb) but works the same spray-and-grow way.

Want a Variety We Don't Pre-Colonize? Try the Wood Lover's All-in-One Kit

If you want a variety outside our pre-colonized lineup — or you'd like to experience the full growing process from inoculation to harvest — the Complete 6lb Wood Lover's All-in-One Kit is the next step up. It's a slightly larger 6 lb bag of grain and master's mix that includes a 10cc liquid culture syringe in your choice of 21 varieties. You inject the culture, watch it colonize, and then fruit — the complete cultivation experience.

This kit unlocks varieties we don't offer as pre-colonized blocks, including Brown Beech, Enoki, Pioppino, Golden Oyster, Black Reishi, Elm Oyster, Phoenix Oyster, and Black Pearl King Oyster. It does require a bit more involvement than the spray-and-grow kits since you inoculate it yourself, but it's still beginner-friendly and far simpler than building a grow from scratch.

What to expect: yields and flushes

Each kit produces 2 to 3 flushes (waves of mushrooms) before the block is spent. Total yield depends heavily on the variety and your growing conditions. In an ideal environment, a fast-fruiting variety like Lion's Mane or oyster can produce roughly the block's weight in fresh mushrooms — around 5 pounds of fresh mushrooms over the life of a 5 lb block. Slower-fruiting and functional varieties produce less by weight but are grown for different reasons.

Freshness and timing

Every gourmet kit is made fresh and shipped at the optimal time for fruiting — we deliberately don't keep much extra inventory on these so you receive a block at its peak. When your kit arrives, start the fruiting process within a few days for best results rather than letting it sit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gourmet Grow Kits

How do gourmet mushroom grow kits work?

Each kit is a fully pre-colonized fruiting block — the mushroom mycelium has already grown through the substrate and is ready to produce mushrooms. You open the box, cut the bag per the included instructions, add light, and mist to keep it moist. Mushrooms begin forming within days. There's no injection, incubation, or sterile technique required.

How long until I see mushrooms?

It depends on the variety. Fast fruiters like blue oyster, pink oyster, and lion's mane often produce mushrooms within days of opening. Slower varieties like shiitake, maitake, chestnut, and the functional/medicinal mushrooms (reishi, turkey tail, cordyceps) take longer to develop. Each kit's instructions cover the timeline for that specific variety.

Which kit is best for a beginner?

Blue oyster and lion's mane are the easiest and fastest, which is why they're our top two sellers. Both are forgiving of imperfect conditions and produce quickly. If you want a reliable first success, start with either of those.

How much will I harvest from one kit?

Each kit produces 2 to 3 flushes. Yield varies by variety and conditions, but in an ideal environment a fast-fruiting variety like lion's mane or oyster can produce roughly the block's weight in fresh mushrooms — around 5 pounds of fresh mushrooms from a 5 lb block over its full life. Slower and functional varieties produce less by weight.

Do I need any special equipment?

No. All you need is the kit, a spray bottle of water, and some indirect light. The kit includes instructions for fruiting right in the box, plus directions for using your own clear plastic tote if you want a more controlled setup. If you live in a dry climate, a portable humidity tent helps a lot — and it's just $3.99 when added to your cart with any gourmet kit.

What if my home is too dry?

Low humidity is the most common reason a block underperforms. Misting more frequently helps, but in genuinely dry environments a portable humidity tent is the best solution — it traps moisture around the block so it can fruit properly. Add it with any gourmet kit and it's automatically discounted to $3.99.

Are these mushrooms safe to eat?

Yes — the culinary varieties (oysters, lion's mane, shiitake, king trumpet, chestnut, maitake) are gourmet edible mushrooms. The functional varieties (reishi, turkey tail, cordyceps, antler reishi) are grown for teas, extracts, and wellness use rather than eaten like a culinary mushroom. Each kit's description explains how that variety is typically used.

Can I grow these kits as a gift or with kids?

Definitely. Gourmet grow kits are one of the most popular gifts we sell — they're hands-on, educational, and produce a real, edible result within days. The spray-and-grow process is simple enough for kids to manage with light supervision, and watching mushrooms appear is genuinely fun to watch.

What is the Cordyceps kit, and why is it smaller?

The Cordyceps Militaris kit is a 2 lb block rather than the 5 lb size of the other kits, but it works exactly the same spray-and-grow way. Cordyceps is a functional mushroom grown for its bright orange fruiting bodies and wellness properties rather than culinary use.

What's the difference between these kits and the 6lb Wood Lover's All-in-One Kit?

The pre-colonized gourmet kits arrive ready to fruit — no growing steps required. The 6lb Wood Lover's All-in-One Kit includes a liquid culture syringe in your choice of 21 varieties that you inject yourself, then watch colonize before fruiting. It's a bit more involved but lets you experience the full process and unlocks varieties we don't pre-colonize, like Pioppino, Enoki, Golden Oyster, and Brown Beech.

Can I reuse the block after it stops producing?

Once a block has given its 2 to 3 flushes, it's spent and won't produce meaningfully more. The substrate is nutrient-rich, so many growers break up the old block and bury it in a garden bed or compost it — some even get a surprise outdoor flush from buried oyster or wine cap blocks.
