5 lb pre-colonized King Trumpet mushroom block. Meaty texture, big 4–5 lb yields — just cut, mist, and harvest at home.

Description

This King Trumpet (King Oyster) mushroom grow kit is a 5 lb block already fully colonized with Pleurotus eryngii mycelium. Cut the bag, mist daily, and thick, meaty stems with trumpet-shaped caps begin forming — no sterile technique, no incubation, no equipment beyond the mister in the box.

King Trumpet is prized in home kitchens and restaurants alike for its dense, steak-like texture and mild, nutty flavor. It is a favorite for grilling and roasting, and it produces some of the largest yields of any gourmet species in this lineup.

Why growers pick King Trumpet

  • Big yields – typically 4–5 lbs wet weight per block across multiple flushes, among the highest of any species we carry
  • Dense, meaty texture – thick white stems hold their structure through high-heat cooking
  • Mild, nutty flavor – soaks up sauces and marinades well, a favorite meat substitute
  • Culinary versatility – grills, roasts, sautés, and stir-fries all work well
  • Beginner-friendly – no experience or extra tools required beyond the included mister
  • Ready to fruit – open, mist, and provide indirect light

What comes in the kit

  • 5 lb pre-colonized fruiting block with first-generation King Trumpet genetics
  • Ultra-fine pump mister for daily watering

How a spray-and-grow kit works

The short versionEverything difficult about mushroom cultivation — sterilization, inoculation, colonization — already happened before this block shipped. Your job is to trigger fruiting and keep the surface from drying out.

  1. Cut the bag. Make a single slit across the face of the block as shown in the instructions. That exposure to fresh air is what tells the mycelium to stop eating and start fruiting.
  2. Mist once or twice a day. Light passes over the cut face with the included mister. You are keeping the surface from drying out, not soaking it.
  3. Give it indirect light. Roughly 10–12 hours a day. Ambient room light or a north-facing windowsill is plenty.
  4. Be patient at first. King Trumpet typically takes 3–4 weeks after full colonization to pin — longer than faster species like oyster mushrooms.
  5. Harvest, then rest the block. Cut the stems at the base while caps are still small and firm. Stop misting for a week, then resume for the next flush.

Harvest before the caps flatten: King Trumpet is best picked while the cap is still small, tight, and slightly convex. Once the cap flattens and starts to curl at the edges, the stem turns spongier and loses some of its signature meaty bite.

Appearance, flavor, and cooking

King Trumpet develops thick white stems and trumpet-shaped, light brown caps — a stark contrast from the thin, fan-shaped caps of other oyster varieties. The stem is the main event here, with a dense, almost scallop-like texture that holds up to serious heat.

In the kitchen it has a mild, nutty flavor that takes on whatever sauce or marinade you pair it with. Sliced into rounds and seared hard, it develops a caramelized crust that makes it a popular plant-based substitute for scallops or steak. It also holds up well in stir-fries, soups, and pasta.

Worth addingKing Trumpet's longer time-to-pin means steady humidity matters even more than with faster species. A portable humidity tent holds moisture around the block so you mist less often and get more consistent flushes.

Common questions

How long until my King Trumpet grow kit starts fruiting?

King Trumpet is slower to pin than most oyster varieties — expect roughly 3–4 weeks after full colonization before you see mushrooms forming. This is normal for the species; do not increase misting frequency just because it is taking longer than other kits.

Do I need a humidity tent or a special chamber?

No. The kit is designed to fruit in open room air with daily misting. That said, dry winter air with forced-air heat makes the job harder, and a tent holds humidity around the block so you mist less often and get fuller clusters. If your home runs below about 40% relative humidity, it is worth adding a portable humidity tent.

How many harvests will one kit give me?

King Trumpet is one of our highest-yielding kits, typically producing 4–5 lbs wet weight across multiple flushes. After harvesting, pause misting for about a week to let the mycelium recover, then resume — the block is rebuilding reserves during that rest.

My mushrooms have large, flat caps and a spongy stem. Did I wait too long?

Yes, most likely. King Trumpet is best harvested while the cap is still small and slightly convex — once it flattens and the edges start to curl, the stem gets spongier and the meaty texture softens. Pick your next flush a few days earlier.

Can I grow this outdoors or does it have to be inside?

Indoors is strongly preferred. The block needs consistent temperature and protection from wind, direct sun, and insects — fungus gnats in particular will find an exposed block quickly. A kitchen counter, bathroom shelf, or any spot out of direct sunlight works well.
