The largest grain bag we stock. Blue Myco XLS-T measures 10" x 5.5" x 24" gusseted — noticeably taller and wider than a standard large bag — in 3.3 mil (85µm) film, with an oversized 2" x 4" filter patch rated at 0.22 microns.

Why the bigger patch matters
A bigger bag holds more mass, and more mass demands more gas exchange. The XLS-T pairs its extra volume with a 2" x 4" filter patch — well over three times the area of the 1.5" x 1.5" patch on standard spawn bags. Scaling the bag without scaling the filter is how large loads end up starved for air and slow to colonize.
At 3.3 mil this is also the thickest film in our lineup, which matters more here than on a small bag: a full XLS-T is heavy, and weight concentrates stress on the bottom seal and corners every time it's lifted or moved.
How to run a grain bag
- Fill with hydrated, drained grain or substrate, keeping the filter patch clear.
- Fold the top over and clip it — do not heat-seal before sterilizing, since the bag needs to vent.
- Pressure sterilize, typically 90 minutes to 2 hours at 15 psi. Larger, denser loads need longer than small ones.
- Cool completely to room temperature before inoculating. Warm grain kills culture.
- Inoculate through the filter patch with an alcohol-wiped needle, or add a self-healing injection port.
- Break and shake once the grain shows even colonization, then incubate until fully run.

How much bigger is this than a standard large bag?
A standard large 3T bag is 8 by 5 by 19 inches. The XLS-T is 10 by 5.5 by 24, so it is wider, deeper and five inches taller, with a substantially larger volume.
Why is the filter patch so much larger?
More substrate needs more gas exchange. The 2 by 4 inch patch gives this bag well over three times the filter area of the 1.5 by 1.5 inch patch used on standard spawn bags, so a large load is not starved for air while it colonizes.
Does a bigger bag need a longer sterilization cycle?
Generally yes. Heat has to reach the center of the load, and a larger, denser mass takes longer to get there than a small bag does. Treat 90 minutes at 15 psi as a floor rather than a target, and extend it for heavy loads.
Can I fruit directly out of this bag?
It is built as a grain and substrate bag with a single filter patch. If you plan to fruit in the bag, a double patch fruiting bag with 0.5 micron filters moves considerably more air and is the better tool.
Can I pressure sterilize these bags?
Yes, that is what they are built for. The polypropylene stays flexible through the cycle rather than stiffening. Keep bags off the bottom of the pot and away from direct contact with the heating element, and fold the top rather than sealing it so the bag can vent.
Should I buy Unicorn or Blue Myco?
