When it's time to replace your heating elements
Heating elements are a wear item. With daily commercial use they typically last about three years, and they rarely fail all at once — performance drifts first. Replace the set if you notice any of these:
- Heat-up time creeping well past the normal 45–60 minutes to pressure
- The chamber struggles to reach or hold 121°C / 15+ PSI on a normal load
- One element has visibly failed and the others are the same age
- Heavy scale, pitting or corrosion on the element sheaths (see photo 2 — those elements are due)
Replace all three together. The elements share the load. Swapping in one new element alongside two tired ones brings back only part of the performance and puts you right back here in a few months.

Installation overview
Replacing the elements is a straightforward job for anyone comfortable working on 208–240V equipment. The general sequence:
- Shut off power at the breaker and disconnect the unit. Confirm the chamber is fully cooled and depressurized.
- Drain the water from the chamber.
- Open the element access panel, label the wiring, and disconnect the leads from the old elements.
- Remove the old elements and clean the mounting surfaces of scale and residue.
- Install the new elements, reconnect the leads exactly as labeled, and close the panel.
- Refill with 4–4.5 gallons of filtered or RO water and run a test cycle to confirm normal heat-up.

While you're in there: the hatch gasket is the other wear part on this machine and typically lasts 6–9 months. If yours is due, grab the 150L replacement gasket in the same order and do both in one shutdown.
Frequently asked questions
Will these fit my autoclave if I didn't buy it from Midwest Grow Kits?
They fit our 150L Commercial Pressure Sterilizer and similar 150L vertical autoclaves that use the same 6 kW three-element configuration. If you are unsure, send us a photo of your existing elements and the data plate on your unit and we will confirm fit before you order.
Are these genuine OEM elements?
They are built to the exact factory OEM specification — same voltage, wattage, dimensions and thread as the elements installed in the machine at the factory. They are the same elements we use for our own in-house production autoclaves.
Can I replace just one element?
You can, but we don't recommend it. The three elements age together, so one new element next to two worn ones only partially restores heat-up performance. Replacing the full set gets you back to factory heat-up times and avoids a second shutdown a few months later.
How long do heating elements last?
Approximately three years with daily commercial use. Water quality matters — running filtered or RO water keeps scale off the elements and extends their life.
Do I need an electrician to install them?
The job is not complicated, but it does involve 208–240V wiring. If you are comfortable disconnecting power and swapping labeled leads, most owners do it themselves. If not, any electrician can handle it, and our technical support team is available to walk you through it.
Do you stock other 150L replacement parts?
