Description
Our Premium Quick-Colonizing 5-Grain Spawn Jars are three sterilized 32oz wide-mouth glass jars of rye, white and red milo, and white and red millet — mixed kernel sizes that give more inoculation points than a single grain. Each lid has a self-healing injection port and a 0.22 micron filter disk, ready for spores or liquid culture.
Grain jars are an easy way to make your own spawn: small enough to watch and shake, and once colonized they break apart cleanly into bulk substrate for a monotub.
- 3 jarsPer pack
- 32ozWide-mouth glass
- 5 grainsRye, milo, millet
- 0.22 µmFilter disk
- 5–7ccLiquid culture
Why growers pick 5-grain jars
- More inoculation points – Small millet and milo kernels fill the gaps between larger rye berries, so mycelium spreads evenly through the jar.
- Easy to monitor and shake – A jar is small enough to watch closely and shake by hand, which makes it a forgiving way to learn grain spawn.
- Clean inoculation – The self-healing port reseals after the needle, and the 0.22 micron filter disk lets the jar breathe.
- Sterile and ready – Hydrated with gypsum and calcium phosphate, then pressure-sterilized at 15 PSI for 3 hours.
- Built for bulk – Colonized 5-grain breaks apart cleanly and mixes evenly into bulk substrate.

What's in the pack
- Three 32oz wide-mouth glass jars
- Rye berries, white milo, red milo, white millet, red millet (5-grain blend)
- Self-healing injection port and 0.22 micron filter disk on every lid
- Pressure-sterilized at 15 PSI for 3 hours
How to use them
- Prep. Wipe the injection port with alcohol and use a sterile needle and syringe.
- Inoculate. Inject 3–4cc of spore solution or 5–7cc of liquid culture through the self-healing port. Not sure how many syringes to buy? Use our syringe calculator.
- Incubate. Keep the jar warm, out of direct light and undisturbed until mycelium is clearly growing.
- Shake. At about 25–30% colonization, shake the jar to break up the grain and spread the mycelium, then let it finish.
- Spawn to bulk. Once the jar is fully white, break it up and mix it evenly into bulk substrate in your monotub.

How many jars per monotub?
Plan on 1–2 jars per 5 lbs of bulk substrate. By tub size:
| Monotub | Bulk substrate | 32oz jars | 24oz jars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small 28Q | About 4 lbs | 1 | 2 |
| Medium 44Q | 7.5 lbs | 2–3 | 3–4 |
| Large 66Q | 10 lbs | 2–4 | 4–6 |

FAQ
What grains are in the 5-grain blend?
Rye berries, white milo, red milo, white millet and red millet. The mix of kernel sizes gives more inoculation points than a single grain.
How much spore solution or liquid culture per jar?
3–4cc of spore solution or 5–7cc of liquid culture, injected through the self-healing port after wiping it with alcohol.
How long does a jar take to colonize?
It depends on the strain, temperature and inoculant. Liquid culture usually colonizes faster than spores. If speed is the priority, our 24oz Super Quick jars are the fastest-colonizing jar we sell.
When should I shake the jar?
At about 25–30% colonization. Shake to break up the grain and spread the mycelium, then let the jar finish colonizing.
How many jars do I need for my monotub?
Plan on 1–2 jars per 5 lbs of bulk substrate. For a Small 28Q with about 4 lbs, one 32oz jar is enough; a Medium 44Q takes 2–3 jars and a Large 66Q 2–4.
How long do uninoculated jars keep?
They are made fresh. Use them within 90 days for best results, or refrigerate them to keep them up to 120 days.
Should I choose 5-grain or rye?
Both inoculate the same way. The 5-grain blend mixes kernel sizes for more inoculation points; rye is the classic single-grain spawn.
