Mushroom Grow Kits

(37 products)

A mushroom grow kit takes the guesswork out of cultivation. Everything you need ships in one box — sterilized substrate, the right container, lighting, and step-by-step instructions — so you can focus on learning the craft instead of sourcing supplies from five different places.

Midwest Grow Kits has been refining its kit lineup for over 15 years. Whether you want to try a simple PF Tek jar grow on the kitchen counter, run a bulk monotub for big harvests, or just spray and harvest a pre-colonized gourmet block, there's a kit sized for your space, budget, and skill level.

Not sure which kit is right for you? The buying guide below walks through each type. Or browse the 2026 grow kit comparison for a deeper breakdown.

Which Mushroom Grow Kit Is Right for You?

Midwest Grow Kits offers six different categories of grow kits, each designed for a different experience level, growing method, and harvest goal. Here's how to figure out which one fits.

Spray & Grow Gourmet Kits — Easiest Possible Start

Best for: Total beginners, kids, gift recipients, or anyone who just wants to try growing one batch of gourmet mushrooms with zero technical work.

These are 5-pound pre-colonized fruiting blocks in 12 gourmet varieties (lion's mane, oyster, shiitake, and more). You cut a slit, mist twice a day, and harvest mushrooms within 10–14 days. No inoculation, no incubation, no sterile technique. The block is already grown — you're just triggering it to fruit.

All-in-One Mushroom Grow Bags — Simple & Sealed

Best for: Beginners who want to try the full inoculation-to-harvest process without dealing with separate substrate and spawn steps.

An all-in-one bag is a sealed grow bag containing sterilized substrate, grain spawn, and a built-in filter. You inject a liquid culture or spore syringe directly through the bag's self-healing injection port, wait for full colonization, then fruit right inside the bag. Minimal steps, minimal contamination risk, no separate tub needed.

Classic Jar Kits (PF Tek / BRF) — Learn the Fundamentals

Best for: Beginners who want to learn classic mushroom cultivation techniques on jars, and growers who want a long-running, refillable system.

The PF Tek (or BRF — brown rice flour) method is the original home mushroom growing technique. You inject a syringe into sterilized substrate jars, let them colonize, then transfer the colonized cakes to a fruiting chamber. Midwest's Mega Mushroom Kit and Ultimate Mushroom Growing & Incubator Kit have been our flagship products for over a decade — the Ultimate version adds full automation with HEPA filtration, integrated LED lighting, and climate control.

Monotub Grow Kits — Biggest Yields

Best for: Growers ready to scale up to bulk growing for larger harvests.

A monotub is a filtered plastic tub where you combine colonized grain spawn with bulk substrate to produce big flushes — often 1 to 4+ pounds of fresh mushrooms per tub. Available in 28Q, 44Q, and 66Q sizes, plus the MycoClimate Automated versions with built-in temperature and fresh air exchange control.

Monotub Refill Kits — Already Have a Tub

Best for: Existing monotub owners who need fresh spawn and substrate for their next grow.

You don't need to buy a whole new kit every time. Refill kits include sterilized grain spawn and bulk substrate matched to your existing tub size, so you can run grow after grow at a lower cost.

Mushroom Greenhouse Systems — Most Advanced

Best for: Serious hobbyists, small commercial growers, and anyone running multiple grows year-round.

The Mushroom Ecosphere Greenhouse Systems are fully automated growing environments — climate-controlled chambers that handle humidity, temperature, fresh air exchange, and lighting for multiple tubs or fruiting blocks simultaneously. This is the top of the lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mushroom Grow Kits

Which mushroom grow kit is best for a complete beginner?

If you want the absolute easiest entry point, a Spray & Grow Gourmet Kit requires no inoculation — you just mist a pre-colonized block and harvest in 10–14 days. If you want to learn the actual cultivation process from a syringe, an All-in-One Grow Bag is the simplest way to do that.

How long does it take to grow mushrooms with a grow kit?

It depends on the kit type. Spray & Grow blocks fruit within 10–14 days. All-in-one bags and jar kits typically take 4–6 weeks from inoculation to first harvest. Monotub kits run 5–8 weeks for a complete first flush, then continue producing additional flushes for weeks afterward.

What's the difference between an all-in-one bag and a monotub kit?

An all-in-one bag is a sealed bag containing substrate, grain spawn, and a filter — you grow inside the bag itself. A monotub kit uses separate components (spawn + substrate inside a tub), which produces significantly larger harvests but requires more steps to set up. Bags are simpler; tubs yield more.

Do I need to buy a separate liquid culture or spore syringe?

For most kits, yes — Midwest's grow kits include everything except the genetics, which are sold separately so you can choose your species. Browse liquid culture syringes or all mushroom genetics. The exception is the Spray & Grow Gourmet Kits — these arrive already colonized and require nothing extra.

Can I reuse a mushroom grow kit?

Most kits produce multiple flushes from a single setup. Monotubs typically produce 2–4 flushes before the substrate is exhausted. Classic jar kits and the Ultimate Incubator Kit can be reused indefinitely — just refill with new substrate jars or use monotub refill kits to run additional grows in your existing equipment.

What mushroom varieties can I grow with these kits?

Most of our grow kits work with any species — you choose the variety by selecting your liquid culture or spore syringe. Common gourmet options include lion's mane, oyster (multiple colors), shiitake, king trumpet, and reishi. The Spray & Grow Gourmet Kits come pre-loaded with 12 specific varieties to choose from.

What if I run into problems during my grow?

Every Midwest Grow Kit ships with detailed instructions, and you'll get access to our complete library of grow guides and instructional videos after purchase. Contamination, slow colonization, and timing questions are all covered in the included materials — and customer support is available if you need a hand.

Do I need special equipment besides the kit?

For most kits, no. You'll want 70% isopropyl alcohol for sanitizing during inoculation, and a stable room temperature around 70–75°F. The automated kits (Ultimate Incubator, MycoClimate Monotubs, Ecosphere Greenhouses) handle temperature themselves. A still air box or flow hood is optional but reduces contamination risk for serious growers.
