Pre-Colonized Grain Spawn Bags

Pre-Colonized Grain Spawn Bags

(12 products)

Our colonized grain spawn bags are the fastest way to jump straight to bulk production. Every bag arrives fully colonized with premium, first-generation genetics, so there's no sterilizing, no waiting weeks for colonization, and no guesswork. Choose from 10 gourmet varieties — including Lion's Mane, Blue Oyster, King Oyster, Shiitake, Maitake, and more — each grown fresh in our own Illinois lab from cultures sourced from the finest collections around the world.

Each 5 LB bag is built to be broken up and mixed directly into sterilized Master's Mix — a single bag inoculates 12–13 of our 5 LB Master's Mix bags, turning one spawn bag into a full block run. Prefer to colonize your own grain? Browse our uninoculated spawn bags and grain spawn jars. New to spawning? Our step-by-step guide walks you from inoculation to bulk substrate.

How to Choose Your Grain Spawn

Just starting out?

Pearl White, Blue, and Pink Oyster are the fastest, most forgiving colonizers — the easiest way to get a reliable first harvest.

Chasing flavor and market value?

Lion's Mane, King Oyster, Shiitake, and Chestnut are gourmet and restaurant favorites with distinct textures and longer shelf life.

Ready for a challenge?

Maitake (Hen of the Woods) is a slower, more advanced variety that rewards experienced growers with a prized, high-value harvest.

How Much Do You Need?

Every bag holds 5 LB of fully colonized grain spawn — roughly double a standard 2.5 LB spawn bag. At our recommended ratio, one bag inoculates 12–13 of our 5 LB Sterilized Master's Mix bags, so a single spawn bag carries a full block run. Scaling up? Order multiples of the same variety, or mix varieties to diversify your harvest.

Colonized vs. Uninoculated — Which Is Right for You?

Colonized grain spawn (this collection) is ready the day it arrives — break it up and mix straight into bulk substrate. Uninoculated spawn bags and jars let you inject your own liquid culture or spore syringe and colonize from scratch, which costs less per bag but takes two to three weeks. If you want to skip the wait and the contamination risk, colonized spawn is the shortcut.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "colonized" grain spawn mean?

It means the grain is already fully run through with healthy mycelium and ready to use — no inoculation, sterilization, or colonization wait on your end.

How many Master's Mix blocks does one bag inoculate?

One 5 LB bag inoculates 12–13 of our 5 LB Sterilized Master's Mix bags.

How fresh is the spawn?

Every bag is made fresh daily in our Illinois lab — never stockpiled — with a 90–120 day shelf life. Refrigerate if you're not using it right away.

Can I use these in a monotub instead of Master's Mix blocks?

Yes. While these are built for breaking up into sterilized Master's Mix, the colonized grain can be mixed into any properly prepared bulk substrate, including a monotub.

What grain blend do you use?

A 5-grain blend of rye, white milo, red milo, white millet, and red millet for even colonization and strong nutrient density.
