What is Black Agar & Why Use It?
Black agar is a nutrient-rich growth medium that contains activated carbon, which gives it its dark appearance. It serves three primary purposes:
- Contrast: Makes white/light mycelium stand out.
- Clarity: Helps identify morphology and isolate pure genetics.
- Protection: Carbon helps inhibit bacterial growth.
Simply drop a small amount of spore solution onto a plate, incubate, and observe. Once growth appears, use a sterile environment to transfer healthy mycelium into your spawn bag, grain jar, or liquid culture. Black agar is ideal for isolations, transfers, and final mycelium presentations.

I was needing something with amuch smaller footprint the bigger tubs were getting in the way a lot. The only gripe I ever have is that the Midwest growkit systems always come with these weird detachable handles that look like something that a dog would like to chew up, or would be easy to misplace... Other than that love you guys, last month I got the Spore culture bottles 30 ml and expanded my pleurotus eryngii culture

New to Research, heard complaints of other Company's all-in-one bags getting Contaminated, many recommended Midwest. I know my process wasn't perfect and your bag made it to fruiting. Maxing out Strain size and shape, matching strain descripton and color. Ordered 5 more bags and 2 heating mats.
Ive ordered upwards of 50 bags of this substrate and only had 1 issue so its safe to say this is a quality product every bag has usherd in a succesful flush of my favorit strains so buy it
