Description

Blue Oyster Liquid Culture Syringe (10cc)Pleurotus ostreatus, first-generation (G1) isolated genetics from Myco Labs. Blue Oyster is the fastest, most forgiving oyster strain we carry, and the one we point beginners to first. It colonizes aggressively, tolerates a wide range of substrates, and fruits in dense clusters of blue-gray caps that fade toward pewter as they mature.

Why Growers Choose Blue Oyster

Blue Oyster earns its reputation on two things: speed and tolerance. The mycelium runs hard enough to outpace most low-level contamination, which makes it a strong choice if you are still building out your sterile technique. It also fruits on materials most gourmet species reject — including corrugated cardboard and shredded newspaper — so it doubles as the go-to strain for waste-recycling grows.

Flavor-wise, it delivers the deep umami and firm bite that oyster mushrooms are known for, with clusters that hold their shape in a hot pan far better than Pearl or Pink. Because it prefers cooler fruiting temperatures, it is also the oyster to run through fall and winter when your grow space drops below 70°F.

How to Use Your Liquid Culture Syringe

  1. Let the syringe come to room temperature, then shake gently to redistribute the mycelium evenly through the broth.
  2. Flame-sterilize the needle until it glows orange and let it cool for a few seconds.
  3. Wipe the injection port on your grain spawn bag or jar with the alcohol prep pad.
  4. Inject 2–3cc per quart jar, or 3–5cc per 3–5 lb spawn bag. One 10cc syringe inoculates roughly 2–4 containers.
  5. Incubate at 70–75°F in the dark until the grain is fully colonized, shaking once at about 30% colonization to speed things up.
  6. Spawn to bulk substrate at roughly 1:3 grain-to-substrate, then drop temperature and introduce fresh air to trigger pinning.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much liquid culture do I use per bag or jar?

Use 2–3cc per quart grain jar and 3–5cc per 3–5 lb spawn bag. A single 10cc Blue Oyster syringe will inoculate roughly two to four containers. Using more than the recommended amount does not speed colonization meaningfully and simply uses up the syringe faster.

How long does Blue Oyster take to colonize grain?

Expect full colonization of grain in 10–14 days at 70–75°F. Blue Oyster is one of the faster gourmet strains available — if you shake the jar or bag at around 30% colonization to redistribute the mycelium, you can often shorten that to 8–10 days.

What is the best substrate for Blue Oyster mushrooms?

Pasteurized wheat straw gives the highest yield for the lowest cost, and supplemented hardwood sawdust or Master's Mix produces denser, meatier clusters. Blue Oyster is also one of the few gourmet species that fruits well on plain corrugated cardboard and shredded newspaper, which makes it popular for low-budget and recycling-focused grows.

What temperature does Blue Oyster need to fruit?

Blue Oyster fruits best between 60 and 70°F, which is cooler than Pink or Golden Oyster. That cold tolerance makes it the right pick for fall and winter grows, unheated basements, and garages. A temperature drop of 8–10°F combined with fresh air exchange is what triggers pinning.

Do I need a flow hood or still air box to use liquid culture?

A still air box is strongly recommended and a laminar flow hood is better still. Liquid culture syringes are shipped sealed and lab-tested, but the moment you pierce an injection port you are exposing your grain to whatever is in the room air. Working in still air with flame-sterilized tools dramatically improves your success rate.

How should I store the syringe before use?

Keep it refrigerated between 35 and 45°F and never freeze it — freezing ruptures the cell walls and kills the culture. Store it in the sealed bag it shipped in, away from strong odors. Bring it back to room temperature and shake gently before injecting.

Is liquid culture better than spore syringes?

For a known gourmet strain, yes. Liquid culture contains living mycelium from an isolated culture, so it colonizes several days faster than spores and produces genetically consistent fruits every time. Spores have to germinate and mate first, which is slower and gives you variable results from one grow to the next.

Packed to Arrive Alive

A liquid culture syringe is living mycelium, and the trip from our Illinois lab to your door is the part of its life you have the least control over. That is why every Myco Labs liquid culture ships inside a foil-lined insulated mailer rather than a plain envelope. The insulation buffers the syringe against summer heat sitting in a delivery truck and against sub-freezing temperatures in winter, so your culture arrives viable in either extreme.

When it arrives: move the syringe to the refrigerator at 35–45°F until you are ready to inoculate. Never freeze it. Bring it back to room temperature and shake gently before use.
