Blue Myco Large Spawn Bags are the bags we run in our own lab every day. Same 8" x 5" x 19" gusseted footprint as the standard large spawn bag, built from 3.0 mil (80µm) polypropylene with a 0.2 micron filter patch and a reinforced bottom seal.

What you're getting
The 3.0 mil film is built to take aggressive sealing and repeated handling through filling, sterilizing and incubation without micro-tears, and it stays flexible after a sterilization cycle rather than stiffening. The reinforced bottom seal is the part that matters most in practice — it's what fails first on a thin bag once you start shaking 5 pounds of grain.
The 1.5" x 1.5" filter patch is rated to 0.2 microns for gas exchange during colonization.
How to run a grain bag
- Fill with hydrated, drained grain, keeping the filter patch clear of wet grain.
- Fold the top over and clip it — do not heat-seal before sterilizing, since the bag needs to vent.
- Pressure sterilize, typically 90 minutes to 2 hours at 15 psi. Keep bags off the bottom of the pot and away from direct element contact.
- Cool completely to room temperature before inoculating. Warm grain kills culture.
- Inoculate through the filter patch with an alcohol-wiped needle, or add a self-healing injection port.
- Break and shake once the grain shows even colonization, then incubate until fully run.

On the T numbers: 3T and 10T are bag-type designations, not thicknesses. In our catalog 3T is the large 8" x 5" x 19" format and 10T is the medium 5" x 4" format. Check the thickness column above rather than reading it off the name.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pressure sterilize these bags?
Yes, that is what they are built for. The polypropylene stays flexible through the cycle rather than stiffening. Keep bags off the bottom of the pot and away from direct contact with the heating element, and fold the top rather than sealing it so the bag can vent.
How do I inoculate without an injection port?
Inject through the filter patch with an alcohol-wiped needle. The patch material closes around the needle well enough for a single entry. If you plan to inject the same bag more than once, add a self-healing injection port instead.
What is the difference between 3T and 10T?
They are bag formats, not thickness ratings. 3T is the large 8 by 5 by 19 inch bag. 10T is the medium 5 by 4 inch format. Pick by how much grain you want to run per bag, and read the thickness separately.
What does the 0.2 micron rating actually do?
It sets how fine the filter is. Air and gas move through freely so the grain can breathe and colonize, while airborne particles larger than the rating are held out. Every filtered spawn bag is a trade-off between breathability and protection, and 0.2 micron is the long-standing standard for grain.
Can I use these for bulk substrate instead of grain?
Yes. The 3T format is commonly used for both grain spawn and substrate. If you intend to fruit directly out of the bag, a double patch fruiting bag with 0.5 micron filters moves more air and is the better choice.
Should I buy Unicorn or Blue Myco?
