- Power on. Let the HEPA-filtered air run for a few minutes to establish a steady laminar flow before starting work.
- Set up your work. Position agar plates, jars, spawn, or substrate within the wide sterile zone — there's room for a second person to work alongside you.
- Work in the airflow. Perform transfers, pours, or inoculations within the airflow zone, keeping hands and tools inside the curtain.

When to replace the HEPA filter
There's no single expiry date for a HEPA filter. It wears out two ways: dust loading, which tracks run hours and how clean your room is, and aging of the media and gasket seals, which tracks the calendar. Plan on about 24 months for typical hobby use and 12–18 months in a busy lab. Keep it in service as long as it passes an agar plate test and holds its airflow, and replace it sooner if it doesn't.
