Description
The CO2 Boost Self-Activated Bag 2.0 is a 5 lb bag of colonized mushroom grain and substrate built to run long and slow. Once activated, the mycelium inside spends roughly 9–11 months quietly consuming the substrate and releasing CO2 as a natural byproduct — enriching the air in a grow tent or grow room the whole time — before finally fruiting into a bonus batch of gourmet oyster mushrooms.
It is not a mushroom kit in the usual sense: you are not growing it for a quick harvest. The mushrooms are a reward at the end of a long CO2-release cycle, not the main point of the product.
- 5 lbsBag weight
- 9–11 moCO2 release window
- 60 secActivation time
- ~Month 10Bonus mushroom fruit
- BeginnerSkill level
Why growers choose this
- Set-and-forget CO2 enrichment – activate once and it keeps working in the background for the better part of a year
- No tanks, regulators, or timers – unlike bottled or generator-based CO2 systems, there is nothing to refill or monitor
- A genuine bonus harvest – the same bag that enriches your grow space eventually fruits a rare oyster-type mushroom
- Dead simple activation – extend the bag, mix the grain into the substrate, and it starts working
- Works alongside any plants – enclosed grow tents and grow rooms are the typical use case
- Beginner-friendly – no mushroom-growing experience required to activate or maintain it
What's included
- 1× 5 lb CO2 Boost Bag (self-activated, unmixed)
- Step-by-step activation instructions
- Retail packaging for storage or gifting
How it works
The short versionElevated CO2 in an enclosed grow space is a well-established way to support plant growth, since plants use CO2 for photosynthesis. This bag is a slow, self-contained way to add CO2 to a tent or grow room without tanks or equipment — the mycelium inside respires as it digests the substrate, releasing CO2 continuously over many months.
- Extend the bag. Unfold it to its full size as shown in the instructions.
- Mix the grain into the substrate. Combine the colonized grain layer with the bulk substrate inside the bag.
- Place it in your grow space. Set the activated bag in your tent or grow room. CO2 release begins right away as the mycelium starts consuming the substrate.
- Let it run. The bag continues releasing CO2 for roughly 9–11 months with no maintenance required.
- Harvest the bonus mushrooms. Around the 10-month mark, the mycelium shifts from vegetative growth to fruiting. Cut the top of the bag open and harvest the oyster mushrooms that form.
This is a slow-release product, not a fast one: unlike our spray-and-grow mushroom kits, this bag is not meant to fruit quickly. Its main job for most of its life is releasing CO2 in the background — the mushroom harvest at the end is a bonus, not the primary reason to buy it.

The bonus mushroom harvest
The strain used in this bag is a rare member of the Pleurotaceae family — the same family as common oyster mushrooms — selected for staying vegetative and CO2-productive for nearly a year before fruiting. When it finally does fruit, growers describe the flavor as a cross between shiitake and buttery blue oyster, with a steak-like texture. Simply cut the top of the bag open when you see mushrooms forming and harvest as you would any oyster variety.
Worth knowingThis product works differently from our spray-and-grow gourmet kits, which are built to fruit within weeks. If you want mushrooms quickly, one of those kits is the better fit — this bag is for growers who want long-duration CO2 enrichment first and a mushroom harvest as a bonus much later.
Common questions
How does a mushroom bag produce CO2?
The same way any living organism does — through respiration. As the mycelium consumes the grain and substrate inside the bag, it releases CO2 as a metabolic byproduct, the same process that happens (at a much smaller scale) any time mushrooms are grown. This bag is built to stay in that vegetative, CO2-producing phase for many months before shifting to fruiting.
Do I need a CO2 tank or regulator to use this?
No. That is the main appeal of this product compared to bottled or generator-based CO2 systems — there is nothing to refill, no regulator to set, and no timer to program. You activate the bag once and place it in your grow space.
Will I actually get mushrooms from this, or is it just for CO2?
Both. For most of its life the bag is working in the background releasing CO2, but around the 10-month mark the mycelium typically shifts to fruiting and produces a batch of oyster-type mushrooms. Treat the mushroom harvest as a bonus at the end of a long CO2-release cycle rather than the main reason to buy it.
How is this different from your regular mushroom grow kits?
Our spray-and-grow gourmet kits are built to fruit within days to a few weeks — you cut the bag, mist it, and harvest mushrooms relatively quickly. This CO2 bag is the opposite: it is engineered to stay vegetative and keep releasing CO2 for 9–11 months before it fruits at all. If you want mushrooms soon, choose one of our spray-and-grow kits instead.
Where should I place the bag once it's activated?
Inside your grow tent or grow room, near your plants, where the CO2 it releases can stay within the enclosed space rather than dispersing. It does not need light, misting, or any ongoing attention during the CO2-release phase — just leave it in place.
