Blue Myco Medium Double Patch Fruiting Bags carry two 0.5 micron patches instead of one, positioned for cross airflow. That's the difference between a bag that colonizes grain and a bag you can fruit straight out of — fruiting bodies need far more air exchange than colonizing mycelium does.

Why two patches, and why 0.5 micron
A single 0.2 micron patch is tuned for colonization: enough exchange to keep mycelium running, fine enough to keep contaminants out while the block sits sealed for weeks. Fruiting is a different demand. Pins and fruit bodies consume oxygen and throw off CO&sub2; quickly, and a colonization-spec filter can't keep up.
Opening the rating to 0.5 microns and doubling the patch count raises exchange substantially, and placing the patches apart pulls air across the block instead of past one face. The trade is real and worth understanding: a more open filter is a less restrictive barrier, so these are the right bag once you're fruiting and the wrong one for long sealed grain runs.
How to run a fruiting bag
- Fill with 3–4 lbs of substrate, keeping both patches clear.
- Fold the top and clip it — don't heat-seal before sterilizing, since the bag needs to vent.
- Pressure sterilize, then cool completely to room temperature.
- Inoculate with grain spawn, then seal the bag and let it colonize fully.
- Once the block is fully colonized, cut the bag to introduce fruiting conditions and fruit directly out of it.

Rule of thumb: if the block leaves the bag before it fruits, use a spawn bag. If the block fruits while it's still in the bag, use a double patch fruiting bag.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use these for grain spawn?
You can, but they are not the best tool for it. Two 0.5 micron patches move much more air than a grain bag needs, and a more open filter is a less restrictive barrier over the weeks a grain bag sits sealed. For grain, use a single patch spawn bag.
Why 0.5 micron instead of 0.2?
Fruiting consumes oxygen and produces carbon dioxide much faster than colonization does. A 0.2 micron patch tuned for colonizing grain cannot keep up with a fruiting block. The 0.5 micron rating trades some filtration for the air exchange fruiting actually requires.
Why are the patches placed apart?
To pull air across the block instead of past a single face. Two patches on opposite sides create cross airflow through the bag, which keeps exchange more even than one patch can.
How much substrate does one bag hold?
3 to 4 pounds. If you want a larger block, the XLS double patch is the same bag design at 10 by 5.5 by 24 inches with much larger patches.
Do I cut the bag open to fruit?
Yes. Let the block colonize fully while sealed, then cut the bag to expose the surface and introduce fruiting conditions. The patches handle gas exchange during colonization, and the cut does the rest once you are fruiting.
