Description
Description
The CO2 Boost Self-Activated Bag 2.0 is a 5 lb bag of colonized mushroom grain and substrate built to run long and slow. Once activated, the mycelium inside spends roughly 9–11 months quietly consuming the substrate and releasing CO2 as a natural byproduct, enriching the air in a grow tent or grow room the whole time, before finally fruiting into a bonus batch of gourmet oyster-type mushrooms.
Activate it in about 60 seconds. It releases CO2 for 9–11 months, with no tanks, regulators or timers.
- 5 lbsBag weight
- 9–11 moCO2 release window
- 60 secActivation time
- ~Month 10Bonus mushroom fruit

How it works
Plants use CO2 for photosynthesis, and raising CO2 in an enclosed grow space is a well-established way to support plant growth. This bag does it without equipment: the mycelium inside respires as it digests the substrate, releasing CO2 continuously over many months.
Mycelium breathes out CO2 as it grows. As it spreads, the bag turns white. That's normal, and it's the sign it's working.
Set it near your plants and leave it. It needs no light, no misting and no attention while it works.
After about 9–11 months, cut the top open and pick the oyster-type mushrooms. No growing experience needed.
Activation in 4 steps
Activate it once, and it keeps working in the background for most of a year.
1Extend
Unfold the bag to its full height so the grain and substrate have room to mix.
2Mix
Work the grain layer down into the substrate from the outside of the bag. It takes about 60 seconds, and the bag stays sealed.
3Place
Set it inside your enclosed tent or grow room, near your plants. Out of direct light is fine. Then leave it.
4Harvest
Around month 10, mushrooms start to form. Cut the top of the bag open and harvest them.
This is a slow-release product, not a fast one. Unlike our spray-and-grow mushroom kits, this bag isn't meant to fruit quickly. For most of its life, its job is releasing CO2 in the background. The mushroom harvest at the end is a bonus, not the main reason to buy it.
One bag, most of a year
Extended and ready to activate
The bag arrives partly colonized. Over the following weeks, white mycelium spreads through the brown substrate until the whole bag is white. From there it keeps releasing CO2 for months, and fruits only near the end.
- Day 1: activate in about 60 seconds
- Months 1–11: steady CO2 release
- Around month 10: bonus harvest
The CO2 does the most good in a closed tent or grow room, where it stays near your plants instead of drifting away.
It needs no light or misting. White growth on the bag is normal.

The bonus mushroom harvest
The strain in this bag is a rare member of the Pleurotaceae family, the same family as common oyster mushrooms, selected for staying vegetative and CO2-productive for nearly a year before fruiting. When it finally fruits, growers describe the flavor as a cross between shiitake and buttery blue oyster, with a steak-like texture. Cut the top of the bag open when you see mushrooms forming, and harvest as you would any oyster variety.
Worth knowingThis product works differently from our spray-and-grow gourmet kits, which are built to fruit within weeks. If you want mushrooms soon, one of those kits is the better fit. This bag is for growers who want long-duration CO2 first and a mushroom harvest much later.
FAQ
How does a mushroom bag produce CO2?
The same way any living organism does: through respiration. As the mycelium consumes the grain and substrate inside the bag, it releases CO2 as a metabolic byproduct. This bag is built to stay in that vegetative, CO2-producing phase for many months before it shifts to fruiting.
Do I need a CO2 tank or regulator to use this?
No. That's the main appeal compared to bottled or generator-based CO2 systems: there's nothing to refill, no regulator to set and no timer to program. You activate the bag once and place it in your grow space.
Will I actually get mushrooms from this, or is it just for CO2?
Both. For most of its life the bag works in the background releasing CO2, but around the 10-month mark the mycelium typically shifts to fruiting and produces a batch of oyster-type mushrooms. Treat the harvest as a bonus at the end of a long CO2-release cycle rather than the main reason to buy it.
How is this different from your regular mushroom grow kits?
Our spray-and-grow gourmet kits are built to fruit within days to a few weeks: you cut the bag, mist it and harvest. This CO2 bag is the opposite. It's engineered to stay vegetative and keep releasing CO2 for 9–11 months before it fruits at all. If you want mushrooms soon, choose one of our spray-and-grow kits instead.
Where should I place the bag once it's activated?
Inside your grow tent or grow room, near your plants, where the CO2 it releases stays within the enclosed space instead of dispersing. Out of direct light is fine.
Is it normal for the bag to turn white?
Yes. The white growth is mycelium spreading through the substrate, and it's what produces the CO2. A bag that goes from mostly brown to fully white over the first weeks is doing exactly what it should.
Does it need light, water or misting?
No. During the CO2-release phase it needs no light, misting or other attention. Keep the bag sealed and leave it in place until mushrooms start to form near the end.
