Colonization and fruiting want opposite things. Mycelium runs faster in still, humid, CO₂-rich air — but the vent holes you drilled for fruiting are bleeding that off from day one. These snap-in plugs seal a standard 2" hole shut while the tub colonizes, then pop out when you're ready to trigger pins.

Why plug the holes during colonization
- Holds moisture in the substrate — open holes wick humidity out of a freshly spawned tub for the full week or two it takes to colonize.
- Keeps CO₂ where you want it — colonizing mycelium doesn't need fresh air exchange, and a sealed chamber lets it run across the surface faster.
- One less contamination route — a plugged hole is a closed hole.
- Clean switch to fruiting — pull the plugs when the block is fully colonized and the tub is ready for FAE, no tape to peel off and no residue.

Any standard 2" hole takes these plugs, so they work across Grower's Select monotubs, Max Yield Bins, North Spore Boomr Bins, Microppose monotubs and most DIY tubs cut with a 2" hole saw.
How to use them
- Spawn your tub as normal — colonized grain mixed into bulk substrate, surface levelled.
- Press a plug into each 2" hole. The taper seats with light pressure and goes in either direction.
- Colonize sealed — leave the plugs in and the tub dark until the surface is fully run through with mycelium.
- Pull the plugs to start fresh air exchange and trigger pinning.
- Wash and keep them — they're reusable run after run.
Plugs and filter disks do different jobs. Plugs seal the hole for colonization; adhesive filter disks cover it for fruiting, passing air while blocking contaminants. Most growers keep both on hand and swap at the same moment they move the tub into fruiting conditions.

Frequently asked questions
When do I take the plugs out?
Once the substrate surface is fully colonized and you're ready to move the tub into fruiting conditions. Pulling them starts the fresh air exchange that triggers pinning.
Will they fit my tub?
If your holes were cut with a standard 2" hole saw, yes. That covers Grower's Select, Max Yield Bins, North Spore Boomr Bins, Microppose and most DIY builds.
Why not just tape over the holes?
Tape works, but it leaves adhesive residue on the tub, lifts in a humid room, and has to be thrown out and re-bought every run. A plug snaps in, seals clean and gets reused.
Can I leave them in during fruiting?
No. Fruiting bodies need fresh air exchange — a sealed tub during fruiting gives you long stems, small caps and aborts. Pull the plugs and cover the holes with filter disks instead.
Are they reusable?
Yes. Wash them between runs and they'll go back in as many times as you need. Six plugs cover a typical four-to-six-hole tub.
