Description

Sterilized Malt Extract Agar Slants are pre-poured, ready-to-use test tubes for long-term culture storage. Transfer a clean piece of mycelium, let it establish, and refrigerate — a colonized slant can keep a culture viable for up to 12 months, far longer than an agar plate.

Each slant is a 15ml polypropylene tube of agar, light malt extract, potato dextrose and locust bean gum, pressure-sterilized, poured in front of a laminar flow hood and vacuum sealed. The angled surface gives mycelium more room while limiting airflow and moisture loss.

Why use agar slants?

  • Long-term storage – Colonized slants keep cultures viable for up to 12 months in the fridge — no constant replating.
  • Less drying out – The tube limits moisture loss compared with a flat agar plate.
  • Clean backups – Keep master cultures and backups of your best genetics on the shelf.
  • Ready to use – Pressure-sterilized, poured in front of a flow hood and vacuum sealed — no prep.
  • Space-saving – Slim tubes store easily in the refrigerator.

How to use them

  1. Work clean. Wipe down your workspace and the outside of your plates and slants with alcohol. A flow hood or still air box helps.
  2. Sterilize your scalpel. Flame the blade until red hot and let it cool briefly — or use a pre-sterilized scalpel.
  3. Transfer. Cut a pea-sized piece of healthy mycelium from a clean plate and place it on the slant surface.
  4. Seal. Close the tube and wrap it with lab film or parafilm.
  5. Incubate, then refrigerate. Let it grow at room temperature for about 4–7 days, then store it in a sealed bag in the fridge. Don’t freeze.

FAQ

How long will a culture last on a slant?

Up to 12 months once it’s colonized and stored in the refrigerator. Check slants every few months and refresh any culture that shows signs of aging.

How long can I store unused slants?

Up to 90 days in the refrigerator before use.

What’s in the agar?

Agar, light malt extract, potato dextrose and locust bean gum.

How many slants should I make per culture?

Make at least three from each culture so you always have backups.

Can I freeze them?

No. Freezing can damage or kill the mycelium — refrigerate instead.
