Description
Description
Calcium Plus (Calcium+) is our agricultural-grade mineral blend of calcium sulfate (gypsum), calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime) and activated carbon — one additive that buffers pH and adds calcium to bulk substrate, casing layers and grain spawn.
It's a forgiving, all-purpose additive. A good starting point is 2 tablespoons per 4 quarts of bulk substrate, or a light dusting on prepared grain before it goes into jars or bags. Choose a 2 lb, 10 lb or 20 lb bag.

Why growers use Calcium Plus
- Buffers pH – Hydrated lime raises the pH of substrate and casing, which helps hold back the molds and bacteria that prefer acidic conditions.
- Adds calcium – Gypsum supplies calcium and sulfur, a long-standing addition to grain spawn and bulk substrate.
- Helps grain spawn – A light coating helps keep grain kernels separate so they break up and colonize more evenly.
- Activated carbon – Adsorbs impurities as part of the blend.
- One bag, many jobs – Use it in bulk substrate, casing layers and grain prep.
What's included
- One bag of Calcium Plus, in your choice of 2 lb, 10 lb or 20 lb
- Blend of calcium sulfate, calcium hydroxide and activated carbon
How to use it
- Gear up. Wear gloves and avoid breathing the dust when measuring.
- Bulk substrate. Start with about 2 tablespoons per 4 quarts of substrate and mix it in evenly while hydrating.
- Casing layer. Mix a small amount into casing material to buffer its pH.
- Grain spawn. After simmering and draining your grain, dust it lightly before loading jars or bags.
- Process as usual. Pasteurize substrate or sterilize grain the way you normally would.
Handle with care: Calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime) is caustic. Wear gloves, avoid breathing the dust, keep it away from eyes, and store it out of reach of children and pets.

FAQ
What is in Calcium Plus?
Calcium sulfate (gypsum), calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime) and activated carbon.
How much should I use?

When do I add it to grain?
After simmering and draining the grain, dust it lightly, then load your jars or bags and sterilize as usual.
Does it raise pH?
Yes. The calcium hydroxide raises and buffers pH in substrate and casing layers.
Is it safe to handle?
