Mushroom Casing (substrate) is a non-nutritious moisture retaining layer to spread on the top and bottom of your mushroom substrate. This method is generally referred to as the "Bulk" method, Monotub, or Bulk Substrate. this is the popular alternative way to fruit your spawn bags or jars. We provide easy to follow instructions on how to use and create your bulk grow. The hardest part of this process is achieving the perfect ratios of substrate, casing and water. We've made it easy!

    Use the following amounts:

    • 1 Spawn bag per 5 pound bag of casing mix (using our 5grain or Rye spawn bag)
    • 6 Jars per 5 pound bag of casing mix (using our 1/2 pint substrate jars)
    • Shelf life of up to 6 months!

    Pros:
    • inexpensive
    • well-mixed
    • effective
    • super fast service
    • great customer support
    Cons:
Prior to my latest mycology grow efforts, I had only grown mushrooms sucessfully once almost ten years ago. I grew them directly in the grow bags which were from Midwest Grow Kits even then. After great sucess upon my maiden voyage to growing cakes in a fruiting chamber using Midwest's Mega Mushroom Grow Kit, I decided to evolve directly to a monotub project. I mixed two bags (10 lbs) of casing mix with two bags (5 lbs) of colonized spawn. I followed all recommendations, misting the walls of the tub daily, and literally watching the mycellium grow in front of my eyes. At day ten, I began exposure to the light. I expected pins within two to four weeks, but no. Two days, and not pins so much as a super fast and expansive flush that filled the fruiting chamber withing the first 5 days of light exposure. As a first time grower outside of bags, I haven't had experience with any other casing mix. What I can say is this. Midwest select casing mix is comparatively one of the lowest priced mixes. My experience with this stuff has been superior! I am super impressed with Midwest's Select Bulk Casing Mix. I am a complete novice who just reaped only his first flush, and realize I am short a few half gallon Mason Jars. I have already filled one jar. The results have been phenomenal

    Love this stuff

This stuff is the bomb. Just mix mycelium, keep dark and moist. Mycelia took off like a rocket.
